An article about the "Baby Patrol", the rescue of 81 children at Han, France, by soldiers of the 134th Infantry Regiment on September 29 - 30, 1944, has been posted on the 134th Infantry Regiment website. Here is a link to that story:

Time Magazine wrote about the rescue in their October 30, 1944 issue.

Paula Evans Baker represented the regiment and the 35th Division at a commemoration ceremony in Han, France on June 16, 2006. She wrote the posted article about the rescue and the commemoration ceremony, which originally appeared in the Santa Fe Express.

I am delighted to announce the addition of a website to the educational activities of the association of l'Espace de Memoire Lorraine 1939-45 (Lorraine Center for World War II) It is http://espacedememoire.fr. The site will be of interest to anyone researching the 35th Division or WWII in general. Much of the information is in French. However, under "liens" there are links to many useful sites in English. They include the sites of the 35th Infantry Division, 134th Regiment, 654 Tank Distroyer Battalion, the American Battle Monument Commission, the WWII Memorial (in Washington DC) which lists all WWII military deaths, the 761st Tank Battalion (Black Panthers) the 45th Infantry Division and the American WWII Orphans Network.

For those who read French, there are copies of the annual newspaper published by the association and edited by Jerome Leclerc. The results of special resear ch projects are listed under "Dossiers." The maps and photos can be appreciated by anyone. There is a long account, with photos and news stories in English, about the rescue of the Children of Han, by members of the 134 Regiment. This was a story that appeared in major magazines at the time but had been lost from US history. As additional bits of history have been discovered and put together they will be added to the website.

The museum of Espace de Memoire, opened in May, 2011, is depicted. The museum is closed for the winter but the association remains active. Drop by the website and take a look. The association enjoys tallying visitors

There are many tributes for Carol. I just wrote a little piece and sent it to Marc Vinzenz, I will give notice when it will come out.

Marcus Speh calls his tribute a Flash - and speaks of death and of Carol in his post to his blog: Marcus Speh - Nothing to Flawnt. He also direct us to Fictionaut where I can see some tributes. One by Robert Vaugham: Three for Carol.

Halvard Johnson dedicates the first issue of Truck 2012 to Carol Novack by welcoming Larissa Shmailo as an Editor, Larissa's words are sincere. I commented on the sadness of it all, on the fact that such a variety of tributes take place when a person is already gone. Just so sad.

The Italian artist Berty Skuber made her video Sieben Farbräume (Seven Colorspaces) in 1996. The video intersperses film, images and animation with excerpts quoted from Wittgenstein's Bemerkungen über die Farben (Remarks on Color). It falls into seven sections, each devoted to a particular color, with the final section associated with the color white. The whole is accompanied by a performance by Philip Corner of three works for piano and percussion (and some humming and ambient noise) by him: 1) Earth Breath - becoming OM; 2) Gong/Ear - becoming pulse; 3) Through the Mysterious Barricade. The last of these pieces is discussed extensively on the Music page of this site. The performance here consists only of a very slow rendition of Couperin's piece, beginning as the final white section begins (at around 13' 23''), and going through to the end of the credits. The tensions and drama played out in the music match beautifully those represented visually through the different colors. With the kind permission of the artist, here is the entire video:

Beginning in the mid 1960s, Istarted trying to expand the poetic possibilities of Greek literary fragments.I often used ideas generated by art forms that ran under such banners asminimalism and multimedia, as well as models from advertising and accidentalcharacteristics of mimeograph production, to draw greater significance fromfragments. I was interested in the way the origins of literacy and Westernculture related to the present.

In 1975, I changed my source tofragments written in Aramaic and left by a colony of Jewish exiles in Egypt duringthe first Diaspora. Many of the fragments were lists of names based in theBiblical Book of Psalms, implying or registering circumstances of birth andsocial position, the fathers' pride and the mothers' pain, the fears, hopes,and obligations of individuals in a precariously situated community. Thefragments – the oldest Jewish writing that survives on anything like paper –included the first mention of a pogrom, and lists used in managing the dailyaffairs of the community. This seemed an ideal starting point for a brief andgritty sketch of some of the basics of Western history. The result was a book,Cried and Measured, published by David Meltzer's Tree Books in 1977.

I moved on to early fragments ofOld Latin. In my workings of the earliest texts in the alphabet that we nowuse, I turned to an exploration of reading practices in relation to poetry inour own time. The Roman alphabet evolved into a writing system that could beread silently. This reduced or destroyed the sound patterns which haddistinguished poetry from other forms of language art. In working with OldLatin fragments, I used some of the practices of early writing (inconsistentdirection of reading; lack of separation between words) to create rhythms bydiffering reading speeds, replacing such devices as metrics with pacing thatdidn't depend on audibility. At a time when literati were talking about"interrogating" the nature of meaning, it was discouraging to me tosee how much trouble they had with a work like this which experimented with themore basic questions of the essential mechanics of reading. In this much largerbook, frameworks of stoicism, dread, tranquility, and, despair frame comic andquotidian trills. bpNichol published the book that resulted, Should Sun ForeverShine, in 1980.

That next step was thetranslation into contemporary terms by the distant descendents of the authorsof the original documents which survived in fragments. For Cried and Measured,that would require a contemporary Jew, who had lost family in the Holocaust,and was, as the Psalms put it, "A stranger in a strange land," livingoutside Israeland writing in a language other than Hebrew. Marton Koppany, a Hungarian Jewwhose very name resembles those of the fragments, offered to do the job. SinceMarton is, in my opinion, the best literary minimalist I'm familiar with, Icould not have been more fortunate. There were many coincidences in this work:My father, a U.S. Army chaplain, had given primary aid to the survivors of theconcentration camp at Dachau;an event which changed his life and set in motion aspects of mine before I wasborn. My father taught at an Army base in Germany when the Soviets destroyedthe Hungarian uprising of 1956. As a child watching these events unfold atclose hand, they had a significant impact on my worldview.

I had several Italian translatorsin mind through much of the 90s and early 00s, particularly those belonging tothe Inismo group. However, I came into contact with Anny Ballardini, who workedextensively with internet publication. She seemed an ideal translator for morereasons than I could have imagined or hoped for in advance. This completed thebasic process of "bringing the text back home" - I had first returned to the origins ofwestern culture in Judaism, from whence the figure Jerome Rothenberg had called"the first universal Jew" had given the Mediterranean world a nexusof ideas around which to build a new religion. A modern Jewish exile hadtranslated it into the language of a hostile nation. The writing system theRomans used for their evangelical book, like it or not, has held the westtogether ever since. Likewise, a modern Italian woman who had made extensiveuse of the Roman alphabet in cyberspace, translated my second fragment bookinto Modern Italian, the language into which Old Latin has evolved. Itsalphabet, made transmissible by digital electronics, was the first to make theinternet a force in binding the world's individuals together. I used the firstRoman efforts at writing to suggest a new poetic process, as well as totransform visual poetry into a more complex and flexible genre.

Although drafts have been on-linefor comment since New Year's Day, and annexes will be added, my birthday, withYom Kippur starting on its sunset, seems a good day to make a generalannouncement of its presence.

At a time of geo-politicalcrisis, and in the midst of revolutions in communication, we, the distant heirsof the origins of what's best and worst in western culture, the more immediateheirs of the Holocaust, the gulags, the country that could unleash nuclearweapons on the world, as well as the most rapid expanse in human knowledge andhuman potential, (and perhaps the last generation to learn to write without theavailability of electronic communication) look back at our origins, and forwardwith confidence in the evolution of writing, and at least some examples ofadaptability and survival to make hope seem more than a sentimental joke.
